What is Women's History Month?
Women's History Month is celebrated in March and highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society especially the most marginalised groups of women; black women, women of colour, disabled women and trans women. It is celebrated across the globe in a number of ways including events and awareness campaigns.
International Women's Day also falls within the month on 8th March. This year's theme from the UN is is 'For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment'. For more information on the theme and what that means in action check out the UN Women's website.
Women's History Month at SUBU & BU
At SUBU, we work closely with your Women's Officer to bring a fun filled month of events to all BU students to celebrate women past, oresent and future. In previous years our events have included a session on making your own period pads, a pub quiz all around women's history and a Black Girl Detox session from former SU VP Welfare & Community, Tolu. This year we have some more great events in the works so watch the space below for these!
Thank you for asking! There are a number of ways to be an ally to the women in your life whether that is coming along to the events we are hosting throughout the month, volunteering your time with charities that support women or educating yourself on women's issues via the resources on our Allyship Hub below!
What about the rest of the year?
At SUBU, we know that while Women's History Month is a time where the spotlight is on women and their invaluable contributions to history, past and present, it is important to empower and champion women all year round and to be an active ally to them too.
This is where the Women's Network comes in! Whether you self-identify as a woman or are an ally you can easily be kept up to date by self-defining with the network below
