The Great big Dorset Hedge is an established project that surveys hedges across Dorset and BCP, relying heavily on volunteers to take part in the surveys. These surveys identify how these hedges can be improved, by better management, and planting up gaps.
We organise surveys in all areas of Dorset and BCP, surveys can occur on any day of the week and typically last 3 hours, either scheduled in the morning or the afternoon. Anyone can join a survey and will be trained in the skills required to identify species and answer particular questions about the health, size and type of hedge.
Benefits to self
Confidence building, teamworking, getting out in nature, our volunteers express that it is a positive experience, and that they continue to learn alot about species and hedgerow health.
Benefits to others
Helping a Dorset wide project to complete a decade long aim to survey all the hedgerows in Dorset, to work with landowners to improve their hedges and plant in any gaps, in turn improving biodiversity and protecting an all important feature of our landscape.
