The Student’s Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU) is a student-led organisation. Every year, BU students vote to elect a team of four Full-Time Officers - each responsible for a different area - to represent them for a year. They help lead SUBU and play an active role in the student community, working to improve the student experience at BU.

Earlier this year, Esther Isaiah, Grace Ehiosun, Jeffery Ononiwu and Fatima Farha were chosen to be your 2024/25 Full-Time Officers; they have taken office over the summer and are already working on multiple projects that aim to make your time at university the best it can be.

We sat down with our new Full-Time Officers to find out more about them and what they’re looking to achieve this year.

Esther Isaiah – SU President

One of the newly elected members of the Full-Time Officer team, Esther just completed her MA in International Political Communication. She’s friendly, empathetic and hardworking and loves to cook and host friends in her free time; she also likes to spend time at BH2 and go to the BU Library to meet new people and have meaningful conversations.

As the primary student representative, she will work to expand placement and job opportunities available to students, ensure disabled students and students who struggle with their mental health receive the appropriate support, and that underrepresented communities have their specific challenges addressed.

Her one piece of advice for new students? “Make most of your time at BU, - engage, and get acquainted with all the opportunities available to you as a student and make the most out of them.”

Grace Ehiosun – Vice President Education

After a year as a Student Rep while studying for her MSc Public Health, Grace has been elected to be your VP Education. She’s energetic, passionate, and optimistic, and loves to Netflix and chill and go to the beach in her free time.

With her interest in academics and ensuring education is as inclusive and accessible as possible, applying for this role was an obvious choice. This year, she will work to improve timetable management and enhance accessibility for all students, as well as organise academic seminars for new students and events to help students destress during busy periods.

Whether you’re a new or returning student, Grace’s advice is to take advantage of everything that BU and SUBU have to offer, engage actively with your course and make friends.

Jeffery Ononiwu – Vice President Student Opportunities

Also joining the Full-Time Officer Team is Jeffery, who’s recently finished his MA Film and TV Production. He’s the life of the party and likes to hang out with his friends and go for a swim at the beach, his favourite place in Bournemouth.

This year, he wants to help students find their purpose and make a change. As you VP Student Opportunities, he will work to increase internship and job opportunities for students, introduce an achievement award for club and society members and bring back TEDx events to Bournemouth.

His advice for BU students is to make use of every moment of every day.

Fatima Farha – Vice President Welfare & Community

Returning for a second year as your VP Welfare & Community, Fatima is an excited and caring MA Multimedia Journalism graduate who likes to likes to do yoga, tend to her plants, relax and spend time at her favourite spot in town: Talbot Woods.

Knowing that not everyone has a positive experience at university, Fatima is looking to push for change and make BU a better place for all. To do this, she will continue to advocate for cost-of-living support initiatives, specialised support for international students and improved in-person access to mental health support; she will also work to introduce a ‘Rate Your Landlord’ system to address housing concerns and ensure that period products are available across all BU campuses.

Her one piece of advice is for you to seek support and assistance when you need it and remember that university services and SUBU are here for the exact purpose.
