Beautrice Laus, better known as Beabadoobee, has been only succeeding since her debut in 2017 with ‘Coffee’, which has been in and out of the spotlight on Tiktok and Youtube over the years. In July of 2018, Beabadoobee signed with Dirty Hit, a London-based independent record label. Jamie O’borne, director at Dirty Hit, told Music Week “When I first met her I was struck by how pure and unaffected her desire to be an artist was…” Her angelic mannerisms and progressive personal relationships with her fans really reinforce these preconceptions described by O’borne. 

After teasing the release of ‘The Way Things Go’ late last year, fans showed overwhelming support on Instagram Live and eagerly awaited the studio release. There is a deeper, more personal meaning behind this song that makes the lyrics that bit more powerful and utterly devastating, “the love you said you had, it sometimes showed”. Her lyricism encapsulates the powerlessness felt when you can’t save a relationship and trying to accept the way things go when someone you care for, betrays you. Bea lets us into her personal life with this song, and by the end of the track, as it glistens out, we are just left filled with sadness for her. 

The new single follows the recent single ‘Glue Song’, which has already been streamed over 125 million times, and her second studio album Beatopia, which reached the Top 5 in the Official UK Album Chart, a massive achievement. 'The Way Things Go' is accompanied by a stunning music video, directed by Jacob Bugden, that is full of visual elements made for us to interpret; why is Bea the only ballerina dressed in black?? Knowing some of the contexts within Beabadoobee's online space and community makes this video and the lyrics that bit more understandable.
