Illia Zabarnyi received a first half red card, as AFC Bournemouth were beaten 1-0 by Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Vitality Stadium.
The Ukrainian was originally cautioned for a high tackle on Rayan Ait-Nouri, but after a VAR review, Michael Salisbury decided the challenge was worthy of a sending off, despite the centre back making contact with the ball.
Matheus Cunha put Wolves in front just five minutes after the controversial red, the Brazilian found space in the Bournemouth box to bring down a Nelson Semedo cross, and smashed the ball past Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The Cherries battled throughout the second period, and competed admirably despite being a man down, but were ultimately unable to find an equaliser.
The defeat means that Bournemouth miss their chance to move up to fourth in the Premier League, and they could drop to seventh before they face Brighton on Tuesday.
Andoni Iraola made two changes to the side which beat Southampton 3-1 last weekend, the returning James Hill, and Marcus Tavernier replacing Tyler Adams and David Brooks.
The Cherries had further good news, as Evanilson and Julio Soler both returned to the matchday squad, meaning Iraola finally had some strength in depth on his bench.
Bournemouth started the brighter of the two sides and Tavernier, who was starting his first Premier League game in over two months, curled an early effort straight into the midrift of Jose Sa.
Moments later Tavernier was involved again, skipping past Santiago Bueno before he was unceremoniously taken out by the Wolves defender, who was cautioned by referee Salisbury.
It was Wolves who came closest to opening the scoring in the first ten minutes however, as Semedo struck the post with a left footed shot, before Kepa kept out Jean-Ricner Bellagarde on the follow up.
The Cherries keeper was called into action once again shortly after, diving low to his right-hand side to palm away a Cunha effort, before Toti flicked a header over the bar from six yards out.
The game continued in frantic fashion, with Justin Kluivert slipped in on goal by Antoine Semenyo, but the Dutchman was quickly smothered by Sa.
Milos Kerkez was booked for taking out Joao Gomes on the edge of the box, but from just twenty yards out, Cunha couldn’t keep the free kick down.
The first major flashpoint of the game came on the half an hour mark, Zabarnyi went sliding in on Ait-Nouri and was carded, but after a VAR review, the yellow was upgraded to red.
The Ukrainian had made contact with the ball, but his studs rolled onto Ait-Nouri’s ankle in the process, and the centre back had to walk, much to the disgust of Iraola and the Cherries faithful.
Just five minutes later Wolves were in front, Semedo clipping a ball into the Bournemouth area, and Cunha controlled brilliantly, before finishing past the helpless Kepa.
After the break, Wolves started to make the extra man tell, and Marshall Munetsi forced Dean Huijsen into a good block, before substitute Jorgen Strand Larsen had his effort thwarted by the leg of Dango Ouattara.
The Cherries rallied and Iraola introduced Brooks and Adams on the hour in search of an equaliser, although moments after the pair came on Munetsi should’ve doubled the visitors’ lead, but somehow placed his shot wide from six yards out.
Bournemouth maintained some sort of control on the game despite the man disadvantage, but Wolves continued to threaten on the break, and substitute Pablo Sarabia fired his shot inches over with ten minutes to go.
Despite some late stoppage time pressure, Iraola's side were unable to fashion a real opening, and fell to their second home defeat in a row.
