Wimborne Town will count themselves lucky as atrocious weather saved the day as they found themselves 3-0 down within 40 minutes and looking at another game without three points.

Weston-super-Mare controlled the game and took all the chances that came to them with a helpless Wimborne unable to put up a fight. The wind and rain looked to be influencing the game with passes getting held up on the pitch and players not being able to stay on their feet.

10 minutes into the game, Wimborne keeper Billy Terrell showed fans behind the goal the conditions as he tried bouncing the ball for it to only get sunk in the puddle on the six-yard line.

The first of Weston-super-Mares goals came in the 18th minute. A poor clearance from a Seagulls corner kept the ball in a dangerous area, and Jason Pope was able to knock the ball first time into the crowded box leaving Terrell helpless as it took a deflection and hit the back of the net.

The next chance of the game came in the following minute for the away side. A threatening ball into the six-yard box gave Nick McCootie a golden chance to double their lead, only for him to fail in his attempt in striking the ball and miss hitting his shot completely.

30 minutes in and Wimborne were unable to create a single clear-cut chance whilst Weston-super-Mare continued to search for the second.

The Seagulls’ second goal came in the 30th minute. A free kick as far wide as the corner post was laid back to the edge of the area for Roy Humphrey to slot the ball in the bottom right making it 2-0 to Weston-super-Mare.

The rain continued to fall. The pitch looked in good condition to the eye but was slowly getting waterlogged and was soon to be unplayable. But before the game was abandoned, McCootie was able to get his deserved goal in the 32nd minute.

A low drilled cross from Jay Murray landed at the feet of the striker who was not able to miss this time and swept the ball in from five yards out.

Soon after the goal the referee opted to check the Wimborne Town box, which was visibly starting to flood, even though Terrell had raised the issue 10 minutes into the game. With the Ref unable to pass the ball over the six-yard box puddle and seeing the conditions were severely affecting the game he decided to abandon the match.

Wimborne Town should consider themselves lucky as the flow of the game was heavily against them and had the match not been abandoned, it could have been a thrashing. Weston-super-Mare were not happy with the referee's decision and the Seagulls manager was shown a red card for venting his frustration to the team of officials after the game was called off. The frustration understandable as the away side were dominating and were on their way to a large margin scoreline.

It gives a chance for Wimborne to work on how to stop Weston-Super-Mare and to minimise their threat in the wide areas. As well as potentially saving James Stokoe's job, the manager will have time to reflect on the below average team performance and look to improve in their next game when they face Harrow Borough away.
