A disappointing end to an intense contest for Bournemouth University Men's Basketball team as they took on UWE Bristol. A very entertaining game saw Bristol take the spoils after coming out 58-55 winners.

The match got off to a frantic start with both teams falling short of netting two hoops. Bournemouth got unlucky as they hit the edge of the target five times in a matter of seconds which proved fatal as Bristol took the lead after hitting them with a quick counter that saw them secure the first two pointer of the game. However, within quick succession the home side hit back and gained their first and second set of two pointers edging them into the lead. As the first quarter went on both sides looked dangerous with noticeable pieces of play coming from individuals on either side. Most noticeable was an excellent run from Bournemouth’s 25 which saw his excellent individual move and clever shot rewarded with a two points. This on top of another brilliant three pointer by the home side saw Bournemouth coming out on top leading 21-14 at the break.

Bournemouth started the second quarter well with some brilliant solo moves from their number 25 who was unlucky not to finish his chance as he saw his teasing shot trickle round the hoop. With two two-pointers scored by both teams early on, the away side started to lessen the deficit with frustrations showed by the hosts as their attempted attack ended up with UWE countering and winning two free throws. Most noticeable performance in the second was Bournemouth’s 25 who was proving to be a menace for the away side. A tight contest saw the teams end the second quarter at 29-28 in favour of the home side who saw their advantage reduced from seven to one.

The third quarter began with the away side taking the lead with a successful three pointer. There was plenty of end-to-end action with both teams cancelling each other out but UWE showed their dominance by continuing to add to their lead. Talking points were raised with calls from the home supporters questioning the referee’s decision to give the away side a free throw due to obstruction from Bournemouth’s number 82. The hosts went on to gain a two pointer towards the end however the joy was short lived after UWE secured another two points in the last seconds of the third quarter meaning they went into the break 51-45 up.

UWE continued to show their dominance as they remained on top for the entirety of the final quarter. A clever and silky bit of dribbling from UWE’s number 23 added insult to injury for Bournemouth. The hosts showed their resilience as they replied with a flurry of two pointers; setting the game up for a tense ending.  Although a time out was called by the hosts in order to regroup their team for the dying embers of the game, this unfortunately did not halt the away sides victory as their final two quarters of the match proved to be most deadly as they went back home with the victory winning in an incredibly tight and entertaining game 58-55.
