Gosport were dominant in the opening moments as they forced the Poole defence back. Dolphins’ goalkeeper Mark Childs was forced to prove his worth with early saves as he excellently denied Gosport on two occasions.
Poole managed to break away on the counter after weathering the oppositions pressure and showed the visitors what they had to be wary of.
It would be the home side who would make the breakthrough in the 15th minute as defender Jamie Whisken thumped a bullet header into the bottom left corner despite the keeper’s best efforts.
Following action stemmed from the away side as looked to get a quick goal in retaliation. However, Poole were able to deal with the attacks caused as Childs and the defence displayed themselves firm in the box.
The game continued at a high intensity with both sides looking to force their way in behind defences.
Gosport thought they had grabbed the equaliser but it was cleared away at the back post.
Things really heated up in the closing stages of the first half with the ref awarding Poole a penalty. The ref whistled for handball inside the box, much to the disappointment of Gosport and the coaching team.
Captain Will Spetch blasted home the penalty giving Poole a healthy two nil lead going into half-time.
Poole seemed in control with the restart of the game as they enjoyed spells of open play in the middle of the pitch. However, things took an unexpected turn in the 68th minute as a corner for Gosport forced Childs’ fist to knock it back into his own goal.
Poole did not reduce to a deep line straight away as they came close to a third with Spetch. Perhaps a goal that should have been scored, the skipper was not able to finish from close range.
With pressure mounting and three minutes stoppage time, Gosport launched crosses into the box. A last gasp opportunity went narrowly wide in the last minute of the game, but Poole were victorious on the final whistle.
The Dolphins currently sit ninth in the table with two games in hand. Three league wins in a row, and four in all competitions has turned around form for Killick’s side at a vital moment in the season having only won two in eight previous to the current good form.
