Despite being hauled with a number of injuries, a youthful Hamworthy United comfortably went through the first round of the Dorset Senior Cup at home versus Shaftesbury FC.
Manager Tim Sills was required to give starts to three youth players, as well as fill his bench with further more. Any concerns were beat down 90 minutes later.
It didn’t take long for the first goal to come as just four minutes in the game Hamworthy’s Jack Lovell slots one past Mark Frampton the Shaftesbury keeper – rolling the ball into the bottom right corner.
Two minutes later Shaftesbury were forced into an early substitution when defender Brad Hill went down with an injury and Jamie Wilson was bought on.
In the 17th minute Hamworthy doubled their lead after youth team player Ethan Quarchioni scored a similar goal to that of Lovell earlier on in the game, but this time rolling the ball past the Shaftesbury keeper into the bottom left corner.
It was just 26 minutes into the game when the Hammers made it 3-0 after a corner was headed home by Lovell for his second goal of the game.
With around eight minutes before halftime, Drew Eccott-Young (Hamworthy) went down after a rough challenge and was subbed off for another of the Hammers’ youth team players Azza Trow who came into the midfield.
When the halftime whistle was blown, Hamworthy looked comfortable and had controlled much of the first half against a Shaftesbury side which persisted on pinging long balls up the field to their strikers or passing it around the back in a nice triangle formation.
The second half was quiet for the most part with Hamworthy showing how solid they can be in defence with captain Billy Walker having a man of the match performance.
Shaftesbury did however get a consolation goal in the 82nd minute after Kyle Graham fired one past Hamworthy keeper Tommy Scott who hadn’t had much to do in the first half.
When the full-time whistle was blown, it finished Hamworthy 3-1 Shaftesbury. Hamworthy will go into the hat for the second-round while Shaftsbury’s attention will now return to the league.
After the game captain Billy Walker spoke to Nerve Sport: “We were solid with five first team players and if you set up right then you are going to win games… I don’t think we deserved to concede the goal.”
Also speaking to Nerve Sport, manager Tim Sills expressed: “We have had to rotate the squad a lot due to injuries and it’s good to give the youth team players exposure to first team football…and they equipped themselves very well”
