AFC Bournemouth let a 1-0 lead slip as they were frustrated by a resilient Brentford side at the Vitality Stadium, falling to a 2-1 defeat.

A Vitaly Janelt own goal saw the Cherries take the lead, before two set piece goals from Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard turned the tide for the away team.

The Cherries are now winless in six top-flight matches against the Bees and also extend their winless league run to four games, leaving them in 9th place and finding themselves four points adrift of the top five.

The Cherries made one change to the lineup that started at Spurs, with Illia Zabarnyi returning from suspension to replace James Hill.

Bournemouth started the game brightly, but struggled to break the Bees down for the opening 15 minutes

Bournemouth opened the scoring in the 17th minute, as Milos Kerkez continued to cause problems for yet another Premier League side.

The Hungarian fired a cross into the box which deflected off the shoulder of Janelt and looped into the net, giving the Cherries their first league goal at the Vitality since January 25th.

Brentford responded well to the early setback, with Wissa miscuing a shot from close range.

The in-form striker would not miss a second time, beating Kepa Arrizabalaga in the air to head home from Bryan Mbeumo’s inviting corner in the 30th minute.

Wissa’s 14th goal of the season spurred the away side, with Kevin Schade and Mbeumo narrowly firing wide moments after the equaliser.

Brentford went into half time the much better side, but in the second half it was Bournemouth who came out of the traps flying, as Antoine Semenyo rattled the crossbar from a close range header.

But another set-piece was The Cherries’ undoing as Brentford completed their turnaround in the 71st minute to lead 2-1.

Kevin Schade’s long throw was not dealt with and fell to Christian Norgaard, who fired home from six yards out.

The Cherries continued to push for a goal, as David Brooks could only shoot straight at Mark Flekken from five yards out, and Marcus Tavernier had a long-ranged shot smartly saved.

But spirited defending and top quality game management saw Brentford see out their lead with relative ease, extending their winning away run to five in a row.

The upcoming international break will provide a break for Andoni Iraola, as he looks to rediscover the form the Cherries showcased just a few months ago.

Bournemouth will look towards their huge FA Cup quarter-final clash against Manchester City at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday 30th March.
