Black History Month was kicked off in style, and what better way to celebrate than with a legendary football match between two of the campus’s mightiest societies: the Society of Nigerian Students (SON) and the African Caribbean Society (ACS). With a friendly vibe in the air, but undeniable competitive tension, the scene was set for a match like no other.
The ACS team, led by the one and only Coach Femi, strolled onto the pitch like gladiators entering the coliseum, armed with not only their boots but an "extra sub"—and no, not the kind you find in your local sandwich shop! SON, not to be outdone, arrived equally ready for battle, their game faces on, reminding everyone that today’s match was about solidarity, unity, and a bit of friendly rivalry between two of the most vibrant societies representing the Black community on campus.
The whistle blew, and it was clear from the get-go that ACS meant business. Before anyone could even settle into their seats (or sip their post-lecture coffee), ACS had fired in two goals, leaving SON stunned and the spectators buzzing. It was starting to look like ACS had this in the bag—until SON suddenly hit the RT button on their controllers and activated beast mode. Inspired by none other than the spirit of Shaolin Soccer, SON’s goalkeeper seemed to have gained supernatural powers, stopping ACS’s shots like he had magnets in his gloves.
But the magic didn’t stop ACS. The goals kept coming, and despite the best efforts of SON’s newly anointed Shaolin goalie, ACS managed to slide in a whopping 11 goals! Talk about domination on the pitch. Not to be outdone, the SON team fought tooth and nail, and with sheer grit and determination, they netted 10 goals of their own, keeping the game so tight that spectators were on the edge of their seats (even though we all stood all through, don’t tell anyone though).
As the final whistle blew, ACS emerged victorious by the skin of their teeth with an 11-10 scoreline, cementing their place as today’s football kings. After the game, the SUBU team dropped by to exchange pleasantries with the ACS execs, and we couldn’t help but beam with pride for both teams. The crowd? Oh, they were living for every moment, especially the ACS fans who turned out in full force to cheer on their squad with the likes of Dhunna, Dani, salim,Annie, diamond. A massive shout-out to all our players and supporters—you guys truly brought the energy!
