SUBU Green

How SUBU stays Green...

Plastic bags: No plastic bags are sold in our shops, you may have seen that we use Biodegradable paper bags only, which we sell for 20p each.

WHY | To reduce waste by discouraging use of bags, therefore charging for bags. No plastic bags are used in our shops because these can take up to 500 years to break down in landfill.

All tea/coffee sold in the Loft (Starbucks) and Dylan’s is Fairtrade.

WHY | To help producers in developing countries make better trading conditions and promote sustainability.

All the eggs used in Dylan’s are free range and our sausages and bacon come from the same local farmer.

WHY | To support the welfare of animals and reduce food miles

Recycling – we recycle everything we can in all SUBU areas – paper, glass, plastic, cardboard, aluminium/steel.

WHY | it takes less energy to recycle than to make something from scratch

We have an environmental policy which states our targets in key areas of environmental activities.

WHY | to show our commitment and act as a Terms of Reference.

We measure our environmental impact on a regular basis and take measures to reduce it wherever possible

SUBU are members of the NUS Green Impact Awards scheme – an environmental accreditation programme for Students’ Unions. This year (2011/12) we have achieved Silver status for the second time and we are aiming for Gold in 2012/13

WHY | To ensure we remain a ‘Green’ Students’ Union and lead by example to others.

WHAT YOU CAN DO...

   Recycle at home/in halls.

Only fill your kettle with the amount of water you need.

Take showers, not baths and keep to a maximum of 5 minutes.

Bring your unwanted postage stamps, batteries, CDs, printer and toner cartridges, spectacles to the Students’ Union reception to be recycled.

Reduce your carbon footprint – walk more, drive less, switch off lights, turn down heating. All of these save you money as well, so there's an incentive!

Join the NUS 'Snap it off' Campaign, and take photos of energy wasting around campus - lights left on in daylight, pointless lights, inefficient lights etc. Upload them to the 'Snap it Off' Website - and even better see if you can fix the problem!
